Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate with your little ones than by baking a batch of adorable heart-shaped cookies? This fun and festive activity is a wonderful way to bond with your children while creating delicious treats to share with loved ones.

Here's what you'll need:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For decorating

  • Royal icing (store-bought or homemade) in various colors
  • Sprinkles, edible glitter, nonpareils
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Piping bags with small tips
  • Cookie cutters (heart-shaped, of course!)
  • Parchment paper

Instructions:

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Cream Together: In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients: Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  5. Chill the Dough: Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. This will make it easier to roll out.
  6. Roll and Cut: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out the cookies.
  7. Bake: Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheets, leaving some space between each one. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until lightly golden.
  8. Cool Completely: Let the cookies cool completely on the baking sheets before decorating.
  9. Decorate! This is where the fun begins! Let your kids unleash their creativity.
    • Royal Icing: Use different colors of royal icing to outline the cookies and fill them in.
    • Add Sprinkles: Sprinkle with colorful sprinkles, edible glitter, or nonpareils.
    • Get Creative: Use food coloring to tint the royal icing and create unique designs.

Tips for Kids:

  • Keep it Simple: Start with basic designs and gradually increase the complexity as your children gain confidence.
  • Use Piping Bags: Piping bags can help young children control the flow of icing more easily.
  • Provide a Variety of Decorations: Offer a wide selection of sprinkles, candies, and other decorations for your kids to choose from.
  • Most Importantly: Have Fun! This is a time for creativity and bonding. Encourage your children to experiment and enjoy the process.

These adorable Valentine's Day cookies are sure to be a hit with your kids (and maybe even some grownups too!). So gather your ingredients, put on some festive music, and get ready to create some sweet memories with your little ones. Happy baking!

Bonus Tip: If you don't have time to make royal icing, you can use store-bought icing in tubes for a quick and easy decorating option.
